The Hōgen Rebellion of 1156 was a brief civil war in Kyoto triggered by a succession and power dispute between retired Emperor Sutoku and the reigning Emperor Go‑Shirakawa, backed by rival Fujiwara, Taira, and Minamoto factions. Though the actual fighting lasted only a short time, the victory of Go‑Shirakawa’s side and Taira no Kiyomori marked the decline of Fujiwara dominance and the rise of the samurai clans that would later dominate Japanese politics.
